Taitung - Where to Buy Fun Souvenirs

 Enjoy the peaceful countryside and coastline at parks, such as Xiaoyeliu Scenic Area and the accompanying rock-strewn beaches. Cycle around Taitung Forest Park and its three lakes or take a boat to Green Island for snorkelling and soaking in saltwater hot springs. The old railway station in town plays host to Taitung Railway Art Village, which features rainbow-coloured paper lanterns and the works of local artisans. Pick up handicraft souvenirs and check the schedule for live aboriginal music shows. Hongye Hot Springs is located in Hongye Village of Yanping Township. If you like beaches you can also check out Taitung Beach, located between Taitung City and Taitung Forest Park. It’s a nice place to go for a walk or a swim when the weather is nice. This beautiful beach is the perfect spot to watch the sunrise and take beautiful pictures. South of Taitung City, you’ll find another 最好吃伴手禮 nice beach worth checking out, Taimali beach, known for its grey sand and stunning surrounding scenery. Also called angel’s teardrop or the sapphire of high mountains, Chiaming lake is not easy to reach. The staff is lovely, and they have a couple of bicycles you can use for free. Just know there is no elevator, so don’t bring lots of luggage. The shop dates back to 1934, and people literally queue up to buy these soft, chewy balls of goodness. They have all the usual stuffings like peanut, sesame, and red bean, but also a few other interesting options like sailfish, swordfish, mung bean, and their signature black mochi. Pisirian is only a few minutes’ drive from Sanxiantai, but you can also walk along the beach to get there. You can rent a scooter at Xincheng train station or at Hualien Station in Hualien City. For something more exhilarating, you can travel through the region by motocross . The source of this spring are outcrops and it can be seen everywhere around the area, with smoke permeating the whole valley. As the water seeps from the rock wall, colourful crystals are formed due to the water's mineral deposits. The Xiuluan creek hot spring is considered to be one of the larger springs amongst the other creek springs in Taiwan. Because the amount of water in the stream is large and currents are rapid, the temperature of the water in the spring is easily affected. Though there is no civilian airport, it's still easy to take a bus or train to reach Taitung. Despite the challenging journey up there, I recommend visiting at night for its breathtaking view. Hotels in Taitung offer great value for your money, so a high accommodation budget isn't necessary. In Taitung, chain hotels such as Sheraton are one of the top choices among travelers. Located in dramatic Taroko Gorge, one of the country’s most popular natural attractions, Wenshan Hot Spring was very popular before it was mostly destroyed in a landslide. Nowadays, you can sneak around a fence or two to take a soak in the remaining riverside pools. We personally love the simple outdoor pool at Yangmingshan Resort (陽明山水溫泉會館, pictured above), which has one of the best mountain views from a hot spring that we’ve seen in Taiwan. This is where you’ll find luxurious Tienlai Hot Spring Resort (陽明山天籟渡假酒店) (see on Booking / Agoda / TripAdvsior), one of the most famous hot spring spas in Taiwan. Both of them have tons of different pools and are good for kids. To get there, you’ll need to take bus 1717, which goes up, over, and then down the backside of Yangminshan toward Jinshan. Most mixed-sex hot spring pools require a swimming hat (泳帽), which you can buy on site if you don’t have. Some fancier ones provide you with a robe and other accessories. Travelers interested in prettier, emptier alternatives should take the 193 instead of the 9 as Nick recommends. Located on the plains of Yilan County in northeastern Taiwan, you can reach it in about an hour from Taipei by train or by riding the bus through one of the longest tunnels in the world. Arguably the best wild hot spring within easy reach of Taipei, Bayan is unfortunately also technically illegal to visit. Enforcement is hit or miss; sometimes the cops show up and ask everyone to leave or even issue fines, so please beware of that. If you arrived on the backroads route #2 coming in from the east, shortly after Longpan Park, you’ll hit the Eluanbi Lighthouse at the Southern tip of Taiwan. After that, you’ll pass a great beach at Sail Rock before reaching Kenting village.
